316L Double-end studs

ASME B18.31.2

A 316L double-end stud leaves the installed end in the equipment body while the service nut is removed. Its molybdenum-bearing stainless performance in wet equipment must cover the trapped body-end interface as well as the exposed end.

Solution annealed; cold worked for strengthened conditions

Solution annealing restores a ductile corrosion-resistant structure, while specified cold work raises strength without precipitation aging.

What we can make in 316L

Clamping stud: two threaded ends with a plain shank

Clamping stud

Use for through-bolted covers and housings with access to both nuts. The plain grip spans the joint; independently sized threaded ends accommodate unequal nut-side clearances.

Tap-end stud: unequal threaded ends

Tap-end stud

Use on valve bonnets and machine housings opened repeatedly for maintenance. The insertion end remains in the body while the outer nut is removed, reducing repeated wear of the housing thread.

Manufacturing route

CNC machining suits samples and special end forms. Repeat lots use cut-to-length stock with rolling or cutting selected for the ordered thread and material condition.

Heat treatment & final condition

The final annealed or specified strengthened condition is linked to the lot; an aging treatment is not assumed for a solid-solution alloy.

Finished geometry

End lengths, runout and effective thread engagement are checked separately from overall length; tap ends are gauged to their own fit requirement.

Food & Beverage Equipment

Washdown pump housings and removable covers

316L double-end studs connect washdown pump housings and removable covers through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Cleaning liquid can remain under the part; exposed finish and access for cleaning matter at the assembled joint.

Water Treatment & Desalination

Filter housings and treatment-pump covers

316L double-end studs connect filter housings and treatment-pump covers through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. The water stream, cleaning cycle and retained liquid define exposure at the installed part.

Pumps, Valves & OEM

Pump casings and valve bonnets

316L double-end studs connect pump casings and valve bonnets through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Repeated maintenance makes fit, engagement and access part of the component specification.

316L material data
UNS S17400

17-4 PH

Aging-controlled strength and hardness.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
H900 versus H1150
The aging condition changes the balance of strength, hardness and toughness. A replacement part needs the specified H condition, especially where contact wear and shock load occur together.

UNS N06625

Inconel 625

Solid-solution strength and resistance to aggressive process liquids.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
Annealed or solution-annealed 625
The delivery condition affects strength and high-temperature response. Keep the specified condition with the component’s mechanical acceptance; 718-style aging is not the strengthening route for 625. Include liquid retained at the body-end thread inside the tapped housing in the exposure description.

UNS S31803 / S32205

Duplex 2205

Duplex strength and chloride-corrosion resistance.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
S31803 or S32205
The specified UNS fixes the chemistry. Solution treatment, section size and the ordered mechanical or corrosion tests establish the final duplex condition. Include liquid retained at the body-end thread inside the tapped housing in the exposure description.

Questions about 316L double-end studs

Can both ends use the same thread designation?

They can, but the body end may require a different fit or engagement from the nut end. Record each end separately, including a different pitch or interference requirement where the equipment drawing uses one.
