Titanium Grade 5
Fasteners & Material Data
UNS R56400
What is Titanium Grade 5 and its applications?
Titanium Grade 5 (UNS R56400), or Ti-6Al-4V, is an alpha-beta titanium alloy combining low density with substantially greater strength than commercially pure titanium. It is used in aerospace structures, engineered fasteners and other weight-sensitive mechanical components.
- Aerospace structures: Airframe and engine components specified under application-specific material and quality requirements.
- Mechanical fasteners: High-strength connections where mass and available space influence the design.
- Industrial equipment: Pressure-vessel and other engineered components using a defined Ti-6Al-4V condition.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide
Aluminum stabilizes the alpha phase and vanadium stabilizes the beta phase. Processing and heat treatment determine the resulting microstructure, so annealed and solution-treated-and-aged material must not share an assumed set of mechanical properties.
- Titanium Grade 5 hex bolts — For a weight-sensitive joint, calculate bearing stress, stiffness and fatigue demand along with tensile capacity.
- Titanium Grade 5 socket head cap screws — Check the socket geometry and installation method against the specified condition and required preload.
- Titanium Grade 5 stud bolts — Record the mating materials, lubricant or coating and operating temperature before establishing a tightening procedure.
Use Grade 2 as a corrosion-led comparison, rather than treating Grade 5 as a universal upgrade. Grade 5 is also distinct from Grade 23 ELI. An aerospace or medical application needs its own specification and qualification; the alloy name does not confer either.
