What is 310 stainless steel and its applications?

310 stainless steel (UNS S31000) is a high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic grade used in heat-processing equipment. Typical material applications include furnace parts, burner components and other hardware exposed to hot gases.

  • Furnace equipment: Retorts, supports and fixtures exposed to heat.
  • Burner assemblies: Components selected for the actual combustion atmosphere.
  • Heat-treatment plant: Equipment parts subjected to repeated heating and cooling.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide

Its chromium-nickel chemistry supports oxidation resistance. Carbon requirements distinguish 310, 310S and 310H, so the unqualified family name does not define a creep-rated fastener condition.

  • 310 hex bolts — For heated covers, provide the metal temperature and joint load rather than specifying only the furnace air temperature.
  • 310 stud bolts — For sustained hot service, request the design basis for relaxation and creep at the threaded section.
  • 310 custom fasteners — For fixtures, show thermal movement and contact with dissimilar materials on the assembly drawing.

Review 310, 310S and 310H differences before approving a substitution. Oxidation resistance and allowable bolting stress answer different questions; neither can be inferred from an alloy family name or a maximum-temperature headline.

Specify the material and final condition

Specify 310, 310S or 310H explicitly. Review atmosphere, temperature cycling and sustained load.

Define the finished-part acceptance

Include the material or bolting specification, required final condition, dimensions and quantity. State the service medium, temperature and loading where known. Agree the required tests, inspection coverage and acceptance criteria for the finished part.
