UNS S41000
What is 410 stainless steel and its applications?
410 stainless steel (UNS S41000) is a hardenable martensitic chromium steel. It is used for mechanical components that need a combination of strength, hardness and corrosion resistance in environments less aggressive than those requiring highly alloyed stainless grades.
- Industrial machinery: Loaded components with a specified quenched-and-tempered condition.
- Valve equipment: Mechanical parts selected for the actual process environment.
- General engineering: Components requiring a controlled balance of hardness and ductility.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide
Quenching develops a martensitic structure and tempering adjusts its mechanical properties. The heat-treatment condition is therefore essential: annealed 410 and quenched-and-tempered 410 are not interchangeable strength descriptions.
- 410 hex bolts — For loaded joints, state the required hardness, tensile properties and any toughness requirement.
- 410 stud bolts — For valve connections, confirm corrosion compatibility before selecting a condition for strength.
- 410 custom fasteners — For a locating or wear feature, separate its hardness requirement from the strength and ductility required at the thread.
Compare 431 when toughness and corrosion resistance justify another martensitic grade, or 17-4 PH for a different strengthening route. Require traceable heat-treatment results; a nominal grade or polished surface does not establish finished-part performance.
