UNS S20910
What is XM-19 and its applications?
XM-19 (UNS S20910), commonly known as Nitronic 50, is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel. It is used in marine pumps, valves, chemical-process equipment and oilfield components requiring strength and corrosion resistance.
- Marine systems: Pump and valve components.
- Chemical processing: Vessels, piping and fluid-handling components.
- Oil and gas equipment: Production and downhole components selected for defined conditions.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide
Nitrogen contributes solid-solution strengthening while the alloy retains low magnetic permeability. Supplied condition matters: annealed and high-strength processed material should not be assigned the same mechanical values.
- XM-19 hex bolts — For pump and valve connections, distinguish the bolted joint from shafts or other components made from the alloy.
- XM-19 stud bolts — For subsea flanges, check the final condition, loads and any applicable sour-service limits.
- XM-19 hex nuts — For structural nuts, match load capacity and thread tolerance to the bolt, and agree a compatible installation procedure.
Compare XM-19 and Duplex 2205 on condition, corrosion and magnetic requirements. Low permeability should be specified and measured where critical. XM-19 can still suffer stress-corrosion cracking in hot chloride environments.

Specify the material and final condition
Annealed and high-strength worked conditions have different properties.

Define the finished-part acceptance
Include the material or bolting specification, required final condition, dimensions and quantity. State the service medium, temperature and loading where known. Agree the required tests, inspection coverage and acceptance criteria for the finished part.
