What is Monel 400 and its applications?

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper solid-solution alloy. It is used in marine fixtures, valves, pumps, process vessels and heat exchangers.

  • Marine equipment: Fixtures, fasteners, pump and propeller components.
  • Chemical processing: Piping, valves and process vessels.
  • Heat transfer: Feedwater heaters and other heat exchangers.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide

Cold working can increase its strength; it is not precipitation hardened like K-500. Condition and processing therefore belong in the fastener specification. Magnetic behavior can vary between heats near room temperature.

  • Monel 400 hex bolts — For seawater piping, consider flow, fouling and stagnation at the joint.
  • Monel 400 stud bolts — For chemical flanges, specify the exact medium and assess whether stress-relief requirements apply to the proposed route.
  • Monel 400 socket head cap screws — For low-temperature assemblies, check specified strength and toughness requirements for the actual condition.

Compare 400 and K-500 for a strength-led alternative, then reassess environmental cracking and the final condition. K-500 is not an automatic upgrade in corrosion or galling resistance, nor does it supply a universal strength multiple.

Procurement and application guide

Specify the material and final condition

Specify the medium and flow conditions, especially for seawater.

Material forms in the technical reference: Round bar · Flat bar · Wire · Plate · Sheet · Strip · Pipe & tube · Forging stock · Hexagon & sections.

Define the finished-part acceptance

Include the material or bolting specification, required final condition, dimensions and quantity. State the service medium, temperature and loading where known. Agree the required tests, inspection coverage and acceptance criteria for the finished part.

Start with the information you have

Send a drawing or share the product form and dimensions. Identify any undecided requirements for review rather than copying a typical property value into the purchase order.
