Zirconium 705

Fasteners & Material Data

UNS R60705

What is Zirconium 705 and its applications?

Zirconium 705 (UNS R60705) is a niobium-alloyed zirconium grade offering higher strength than commercially pure Zirconium 702. It is considered for chemical-equipment components when both corrosion compatibility and mechanical loading influence the material choice.

  • Chemical-process equipment: Loaded components in equipment selected for zirconium-compatible fluids.
  • Pressure equipment: Vessel and connection components requiring a specified material form and design basis.
  • Heat-transfer systems: Associated hardware where the required load exceeds the chosen 702 condition.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide

Niobium increases the strength of Zirconium 705, while a protective oxide remains central to its corrosion behavior. Its higher strength does not make 702 test results or design stresses transferable to 705 fasteners.

  • Zirconium 705 stud bolts — For pressure-joint review, provide the operating load, temperature and material specification instead of specifying only a zirconium grade.
  • Zirconium 705 hex bolts — On thick-section assemblies, identify the stock size and proposed processing route so condition-specific properties can be checked.
  • Zirconium 705 custom fasteners — For a welded or heated feature, include the process sequence and required post-process inspection in the drawing review.

Compare Zirconium 702 if the connection can meet its load requirement without the stronger grade. For either material, agree finished-part testing and lot traceability; mill-product data are not a substitute for acceptance of the actual fastener.

Procurement and application guide

Specify the material and final condition

Verify the medium, impurities and temperature; zirconium is not suitable for every acid.

Material forms in the technical reference: Bar · Wire · Sheet · Strip · Plate · Tube · Pipe · Forgings.

Define the finished-part acceptance

Include the material or bolting specification, required final condition, dimensions and quantity. State the service medium, temperature and loading where known. Agree the required tests, inspection coverage and acceptance criteria for the finished part.

Start with the information you have

Send a drawing or share the product form and dimensions. Identify any undecided requirements for review rather than copying a typical property value into the purchase order.
