Titanium Grade 2
Fasteners & Material Data
UNS R50400
What is Titanium Grade 2 and its applications?
Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400) is commercially pure titanium used where corrosion resistance, low mass and formability matter more than very high strength. Typical applications include seawater piping, heat exchangers and chemical-process vessels.
- Seawater systems: Cooling-water piping and heat-exchanger components.
- Chemical processing: Vessels and associated hardware selected for compatibility with the actual process medium.
- Marine equipment: Corrosion-exposed components where lower component mass is useful.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide
Grade 2 relies on a protective titanium oxide film rather than an age-hardening treatment. Its predominantly alpha structure provides useful ductility; the grade designation should not be read as a high-strength fastener property class.
- Titanium Grade 2 hex bolts — For exposed marine connections, assess the connected metals and area ratio as well as the corrosion of the bolt itself.
- Titanium Grade 2 stud bolts — For vessel joints, establish the required clamp load and thread engagement before deciding whether commercially pure titanium has sufficient strength.
- Titanium Grade 2 flat washers — Specify bearing dimensions and surface condition; the washer must suit both the clamped surface and the tightening method.
Consider Titanium Grade 5 when strength drives the design, but reassess the environment and installation procedure. Neither grade should be assigned a torque from a stainless-steel table. Address thread friction, galling and possible hydrogen uptake when defining the joint.
