Stainless Steel 310H
Fasteners & Material Data
UNS S31009
What is 310H stainless steel and its applications?
310H stainless steel (UNS S31009) is a controlled-carbon austenitic grade specified for elevated-temperature strength. It belongs to the 310 heat-resistant family, but its H designation carries requirements that should remain explicit on a purchase order.
- Hot process equipment: Components whose design depends on elevated-temperature properties.
- Furnace supports: Loaded parts subject to prolonged heat exposure.
- Thermal plant connections: Hardware requiring a defined creep-design basis.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide
Controlled carbon supports the high-temperature properties sought from the H grade. The applicable product specification and processing requirements matter as much as the nominal chromium-nickel chemistry.
- 310H stud bolts — State service duration and temperature so the required creep and relaxation basis can be reviewed.
- 310H hex bolts — For heated supports, include the bearing material and differential thermal movement in the joint calculation.
- 310H custom fasteners — Define the complete manufacturing sequence and acceptance tests when machining a threaded part from certified stock.
310S cannot be assumed to satisfy 310H. Before replacing either with Incoloy 800H, compare the governing design requirements and available condition-specific data. Room-temperature tensile strength alone cannot resolve the substitution.
