What is Hastelloy C-276 and its applications?

Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy containing tungsten. It is used in chemical-process equipment for resistance to a range of reducing and oxidizing media, including chloride-bearing solutions.

  • Chemical reactors: Vessels and columns handling compatible aggressive chemicals.
  • Heat exchangers: Components selected against the specific process stream.
  • Chloride-bearing process equipment: Parts requiring resistance to localized corrosion and environmental cracking.

Engineering Application & Selection Guide

Chromium and molybdenum support its corrosion resistance. Low carbon and silicon reduce concerns about detrimental precipitation during welding. Specify the thermal condition of the stock and finished part alongside the corrosion requirements.

  • Hastelloy C-276 stud bolts — For acid-reactor joints, define process chemistry and finished-fastener mechanical requirements separately.
  • Hastelloy C-276 hex bolts — For scrubber connections, review galvanic coupling, crevices and the lubrication method. Matching nominal alloys does not remove every corrosion mechanism.
  • Hastelloy C-276 socket head cap screws — For compact fluid controls, specify surface condition, thread fit and whether the screw is wetted by process fluid.

Use the C-276 and C-22 comparison alongside corrosion data for the actual process chemistry. Acid concentration, temperature, oxidizing contaminants and shutdown conditions can change the selection. Neither alloy name establishes an allowable joint load.
