A-286 Double-end studs

ASME B18.31.2

A A-286 double-end stud leaves the installed end in the equipment body while the service nut is removed. Its aged iron–nickel alloy strength for hot bolting must cover the trapped body-end interface as well as the exposed end.

Heat Treatment

Solution treated and aged

Solution treatment is followed by precipitation aging, with the Grade 660 class defining the required heat-treatment route and final properties.

What we can make in A-286

Clamping stud: two threaded ends with a plain shank

Clamping stud

Use for through-bolted covers and housings with access to both nuts. The plain grip spans the joint; independently sized threaded ends accommodate unequal nut-side clearances.

Tap-end stud: unequal threaded ends

Tap-end stud

Use on valve bonnets and machine housings opened repeatedly for maintenance. The insertion end remains in the body while the outer nut is removed, reducing repeated wear of the housing thread.

Manufacturing route

CNC machining suits samples and special end forms. Repeat lots use cut-to-length stock with rolling or cutting selected for the ordered thread and material condition.

Heat treatment & final condition

Solution treatment and the specified aging condition are recorded against the production lot; final dimensions are checked after thermal processing.

Finished geometry

End lengths, runout and effective thread engagement are checked separately from overall length; tap ends are gauged to their own fit requirement.

Furnaces & Heat Treatment

Retort and furnace-access covers

A-286 double-end studs connect retort and furnace-access covers through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Hot dwell, thermal expansion and repeated furnace cycles set the working load.

Power & Turbines

Hot-gas access covers and inspection closures

A-286 double-end studs connect hot-gas access covers and inspection closures through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Hot dwell and start-stop expansion act on the supported or moving component.

Chemical Processing

Reformer access covers and hot-gas inspection closures

A-286 double-end studs connect reformer access covers and hot-gas inspection closures through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. These parts work in the heated equipment zone, where sustained loading and thermal expansion govern their section and clearance.

A-286 material data
UNS N08811

Incoloy 800HT

Tightly controlled carbon and Al + Ti for creep duty.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
N08811 material control
800HT tightens the 800-family chemistry around creep performance. Its solution-treated, coarse-grain condition and N08811 identity should remain linked through forming and final acceptance. At the body-end thread inside the tapped housing, the relevant metal temperature can differ from the process or furnace set point.

UNS N07718

Inconel 718

Precipitation-hardened strength for compact, highly loaded connections.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
Strength after aging
Machine-stock properties and final aged properties describe different states. The final heat-treatment lot and mechanical results establish the strength available in the installed part. At the body-end thread inside the tapped housing, the relevant metal temperature can differ from the process or furnace set point.

310S

Low-carbon heat resistance in oxidation-exposed equipment.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
310S is not 310H
S31008 is the low-carbon grade. For a component under sustained hot load, distinguish that specification from the controlled-carbon creep purpose of S31009. At the body-end thread inside the tapped housing, the relevant metal temperature can differ from the process or furnace set point.

Questions about A-286 double-end studs

Can both ends use the same thread designation?

They can, but the body end may require a different fit or engagement from the nut end. Record each end separately, including a different pitch or interference requirement where the equipment drawing uses one.
