Titanium Grade 5 Square-head positioning bolts

ASME B18.2.1ASTM B348

Titanium Grade 5 positioning bolts separate anti-rotation at the square head from location at the shoulder. The material’s higher strength than commercially pure titanium at low density applies to these loaded contact surfaces as well as the thread.

Heat Treatment

Annealed

Annealing reduces working stresses and restores ductility, with atmosphere and surface control limiting contamination during heating.

What we can make in Titanium Grade 5

Square head with four external flats

Square head

Capture the square head in a matching slot or pocket to stop rotation while tightening from the nut side. Head width and pocket clearance determine how much turning play remains.

Stepped locating shank

Locating shank

Use a machined step or shank to locate fixture plates and adjustable tooling. Specify its fit to the mating bore when repeatable position matters; thread clearance cannot provide that locating accuracy.

Manufacturing route

CNC machining provides the initial route for special heads and small lots. Formed production requires alloy-specific temperature and surface-contamination control.

Heat treatment & final condition

Forming and thermal processing require contamination control. The final surface is cleaned before dimensional and material acceptance.

Finished geometry

Head geometry, bearing face, shank and thread fit are checked after the final machining and thermal operations.

Where Titanium Grade 5 fits — and what matters

Industrial Machinery & Automation

Machine frames and positioning fixtures

Titanium Grade 5 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on machine frames and positioning fixtures. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. Alignment, operating cycles and replacement access define the working interface.

Pumps, Valves & OEM

Actuator mounts and pump baseplates

Titanium Grade 5 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on actuator mounts and pump baseplates. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. Repeated maintenance makes fit, engagement and access part of the component specification.

Assembly fixtures and test-rig frames

Titanium Grade 5 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on assembly fixtures and test-rig frames. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. Repeated tooling changes require consistent seating and repeatable assembly dimensions.

UNS R50400

Titanium Grade 2

Low mass, corrosion resistance and commercially pure titanium formability.

Connection priority
Bearing at the locating step and reaction against the square head
Commercially pure titanium
Grade 2 favours corrosion resistance and forming characteristics over the higher strength of Grade 5. Mating-metal contact, surface condition and assembly friction remain part of the connection design. Include liquid retained at the square-head pocket and locating shoulder in the exposure description.

Inconel 718

Precipitation-hardened strength for compact, highly loaded connections.

Connection priority
Bearing at the locating step and reaction against the square head
Strength after aging
Machine-stock properties and final aged properties describe different states. The final heat-treatment lot and mechanical results establish the strength available in the installed part. At the square-head pocket and locating shoulder, the relevant metal temperature can differ from the process or furnace set point.

Questions about Titanium Grade 5 square-head positioning bolts

Which tolerance should locate the component?

Use the specified shoulder or locating diameter, with a matching hole fit. Head clearance serves tool engagement or anti-rotation; it should not silently replace the drawing’s locating datum.
