Hastelloy B-3 Double-end studs

ASME B18.31.2ASTM B335

B-3 double-end studs address reducing-acid exposure at chemical pump and valve covers. The tapped body end can retain contaminated liquid, making oxidising impurities a material-selection issue even after the exposed nut end drains.

Solution annealed

Solution annealing dissolves detrimental precipitates, followed by rapid cooling to preserve corrosion resistance.

What we can make in Hastelloy B-3

Clamping stud: two threaded ends with a plain shank

Clamping stud

Use for through-bolted covers and housings with access to both nuts. The plain grip spans the joint; independently sized threaded ends accommodate unequal nut-side clearances.

Tap-end stud: unequal threaded ends

Tap-end stud

Use on valve bonnets and machine housings opened repeatedly for maintenance. The insertion end remains in the body while the outer nut is removed, reducing repeated wear of the housing thread.

Manufacturing route

CNC machining suits samples and special end forms. Repeat lots use cut-to-length stock with rolling or cutting selected for the ordered thread and material condition.

Heat treatment & final condition

The final annealed or specified strengthened condition is linked to the lot; an aging treatment is not assumed for a solid-solution alloy.

Finished geometry

End lengths, runout and effective thread engagement are checked separately from overall length; tap ends are gauged to their own fit requirement.

Chemical Processing

Chemical pump covers and reactor connections

Hastelloy B-3 double-end studs connect chemical pump covers and reactor connections through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Process liquid can remain at the contact after the exposed surface drains.

Pumps, Valves & OEM

Pump casings and valve bonnets

Hastelloy B-3 double-end studs connect pump casings and valve bonnets through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Repeated maintenance makes fit, engagement and access part of the component specification.

Mining & Mineral Processing

Chemical-recovery pump and vessel covers

Hastelloy B-3 double-end studs connect chemical-recovery pump and vessel covers through a threaded body end and an accessible nut end. The plain shank spans the cover grip. Leach solution and deposits act on the installed part; corrosion duty is separate from abrasive wear.

Hastelloy B-3 material data
UNS N10276

Hastelloy C-276

Resistance to chemically aggressive, mixed process streams.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
Process liquid and shutdown chemistry
C-276 is selected for its nickel–chromium–molybdenum–tungsten chemistry. Residual product, cleaning liquid and oxidising contamination can expose a sheltered connection differently from the main flow. Include liquid retained at the body-end thread inside the tapped housing in the exposure description.

Inconel 625

Solid-solution strength and resistance to aggressive process liquids.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
Annealed or solution-annealed 625
The delivery condition affects strength and high-temperature response. Keep the specified condition with the component’s mechanical acceptance; 718-style aging is not the strengthening route for 625. Include liquid retained at the body-end thread inside the tapped housing in the exposure description.

Hastelloy C-22

Corrosion resistance across oxidising and reducing process exposures.

Connection priority
Tension through the grip and load transfer into the housing
Production and cleaning cycles
C-22’s chromium-bearing chemistry is relevant when chemical exposure changes between operating and cleaning cycles. Include both liquids when comparing it with C-276 or a B-type nickel alloy. Include liquid retained at the body-end thread inside the tapped housing in the exposure description.

Questions about B-3 double-end studs

Can both ends use the same thread designation?

They can, but the body end may require a different fit or engagement from the nut end. Record each end separately, including a different pitch or interference requirement where the equipment drawing uses one.
