Hastelloy B-2 Stud Bolts
ASME B18.31.2
Hastelloy B-2 stud bolts pair a nickel-molybdenum alloy with double-ended closure for reactor and pickling joints that need controlled tensioning and repeated disassembly in reducing-acid service. Its reducing-acid resistance is useful at exposed threaded ends and in crevices around the stud-to-nut connection.

What we can make in Hastelloy B-2
Fully threaded
Two nuts clamp the flange or cover; usable thread length spans the assembled grip.
Double-end
A plain centre spans the grip, with a threaded portion at each end for the nuts.
Tap-end
One end engages a tapped casing; the exposed end accepts the cover nut.

Manufacturing route
CNC machining suits samples and special end forms. Repeat lots use cut-to-length stock with rolling or cutting selected for the ordered thread and material condition.
Heat treatment & final condition
The final annealed or specified strengthened condition is linked to the lot; an aging treatment is not assumed for a solid-solution alloy.
Finished geometry
End lengths, runout and effective thread engagement are checked separately from overall length; tap ends are gauged to their own fit requirement.
Where B-2 fits — and what matters

Reactor vessel & manway flanges
Hastelloy B-2 Stud BoltsOn reducing-acid reactor covers, B-2 studs provide fixed locating points that remain in place while the manway nuts are removed. Nickel-molybdenum corrosion resistance protects exposed threads near acid leaks and condensate. The stud arrangement is useful for repeated vessel access without rotating every fastener out of the flange.
Connection requirements
- Reactor flange thickness, gasket type, and required preload
- Stud diameter, overall length, and nut engagement at each end
- Reducing-acid chemistry, oxidising-contaminant exclusion, and heat-number certification

Pickling tank & acid-bath hardware
Hastelloy B-2 Stud BoltsB-2 studs can serve removable covers around a reducing-acid pickling circuit when the used bath chemistry is compatible. Ferric and cupric ions are significant concerns; fresh-acid compatibility does not establish suitability after contamination. The studs provide acid-resistant fastening points near splash and leak paths.
Connection requirements
- Tank cover thickness, gasket type, and required preload
- Stud diameter, overall length, and nut engagement at each end
- Reducing-acid chemistry, oxidising-contaminant exclusion, and heat-number certification

Acid heat exchangers & condensers
Hastelloy B-2 Stud BoltsExchanger channel-cover studs can be exposed at the gasket edge to leaking reducing acid. B-2 places acid-resistant material in the loaded shank and thread ends. Nuts remain accessible for cover removal, allowing the fastening arrangement to suit repeated tube-cleaning and inspection work.
Connection requirements
- Exchanger cover thickness, gasket type, and required preload
- Stud diameter, overall length, and nut engagement at each end
- Reducing-acid chemistry, oxidising-contaminant exclusion, and heat-number certification

Hastelloy B-2 material dataHastelloy B-3 Stud Bolts
Reducing-acid exchanger and reactor covers need studs that tolerate leakage at the projecting threads as well as the exposed shank. Hastelloy B-3 studs address that corrosion duty and offer improved stability over B-2 during fabrication heating. Removable nuts give access to the cover; ferric or cupric contamination remains a material-selection limit for the B family.
Hastelloy C-276 Stud Bolts
Hastelloy C-276 studs suit repeatedly opened reactor, scrubber and acid-exchanger covers exposed to corrosive deposits or process leakage. The alloy protects the loaded stud surfaces in compatible mixed chemical media. Removable nuts provide access while body-mounted studs can remain installed.
Hastelloy C-22 Stud Bolts
Hastelloy C-22 studs suit serviceable pump and reactor covers where process mixtures or cleaning cycles change the chemical exposure. Broad corrosion resistance protects exposed threads and shanks. Fixed studs also assist cover positioning before accessible nuts are tightened.

Questions about B-2 stud bolts & threaded rods
Does changing the stud alloy also change the nut selection?
The nut needs compatible internal threads, sufficient engaged height and a specified material condition. Select lubricant or surface treatment with the stud–nut pair, because assembly friction affects the preload obtained from tightening.
