Titanium Grade 5 Set screws

ISO 4026 / ISO 4027ASTM B348

Titanium Grade 5 set screws put higher strength than commercially pure titanium at low density at a small, highly loaded shaft contact. Point style and the final hardness determine whether that contact locates, clamps or indents the mating part.

Annealed

Annealing reduces working stresses and restores ductility, with atmosphere and surface control limiting contamination during heating.

What we can make in Titanium Grade 5

flat point set screw, axial section showing end profile

Flat point

Use for repeated adjustment against a flat or pad where deep penetration is unwanted. A prepared flat on the shaft gives more stable seating than contact on a round surface.

cone point set screw, axial section showing end profile

Cone point

Use for positive location in a prepared dimple on a shaft or collar. The concentrated tip contact can mark the component, making it less suitable for frequent repositioning on a finished shaft.

dog point set screw, axial section showing end profile

Dog point

Use the cylindrical tip in a hole or guide slot to locate a collar or restrict travel. Control tip diameter and projection to avoid binding or bottoming in the mating feature.

cup point set screw, axial section showing end profile

Cup point

Use on shaft collars and hubs where the cup edge can bite into the shaft to resist slip. Expect a contact mark; use a prepared seat when repeated removal and repositioning matter.

Manufacturing route

CNC machining suits small lots and special points. The socket and flat, cup, cone or dog point are produced as functional features on the same axis.

Heat treatment & final condition

Forming and thermal processing require contamination control. The final surface is cleaned before dimensional and material acceptance.

Finished geometry

The point is checked for geometry and surface damage; a corrosion-resistant alloy does not automatically provide a hardened biting edge.

Where Titanium Grade 5 fits — and what matters

Industrial Machinery & Automation

Drive shafts, collars and guide pins

Titanium Grade 5 set screws lock collars or hubs to drive shafts, collars and guide pins. Cup, cone, flat and dog points transfer load through different shaft contacts or locating features. Alignment, operating cycles and replacement access define the working interface.

Pumps, Valves & OEM

Valve stems and pump-drive collars

Titanium Grade 5 set screws lock collars or hubs to valve stems and pump-drive collars. Cup, cone, flat and dog points transfer load through different shaft contacts or locating features. Repeated maintenance makes fit, engagement and access part of the component specification.

Automotive & EV Manufacturing Equipment

Fixture pins and positioning shafts

Titanium Grade 5 set screws lock collars or hubs to fixture pins and positioning shafts. Cup, cone, flat and dog points transfer load through different shaft contacts or locating features. Repeated tooling changes require consistent seating and repeatable assembly dimensions.

Titanium Grade 2

Low mass, corrosion resistance and commercially pure titanium formability.

Connection priority
Local contact pressure at the point
Commercially pure titanium
Grade 2 favours corrosion resistance and forming characteristics over the higher strength of Grade 5. Mating-metal contact, surface condition and assembly friction remain part of the connection design. Include liquid retained at the point against the shaft and the blind drive recess in the exposure description.

Strength after aging
Machine-stock properties and final aged properties describe different states. The final heat-treatment lot and mechanical results establish the strength available in the installed part. At the point against the shaft and the blind drive recess, the relevant metal temperature can differ from the process or furnace set point.

Questions about Titanium Grade 5 set screws

Should point hardness always be maximised?

A very hard point can damage a softer shaft, while a soft point can flatten on a hard surface. The point geometry, shaft hardness and required holding or locating function determine the useful combination.
