Monel 400 Square-head positioning bolts
ASME B18.2.1ASTM B164
Monel 400 positioning bolts separate anti-rotation at the square head from location at the shoulder. The material’s nickel–copper corrosion resistance in seawater and selected chemicals applies to these loaded contact surfaces as well as the thread.

Heat Treatment
Annealed; cold worked for higher strengthAnnealing restores ductility after working, while the specified amount of cold work sets higher-strength conditions without aging.
What we can make in Monel 400
Square head
Capture the square head in a matching slot or pocket to stop rotation while tightening from the nut side. Head width and pocket clearance determine how much turning play remains.
Locating shank
Use a machined step or shank to locate fixture plates and adjustable tooling. Specify its fit to the mating bore when repeatable position matters; thread clearance cannot provide that locating accuracy.

Manufacturing route
CNC machining suits samples and small lots. Cold heading or hot forging is selected for volume production according to alloy formability, head section and size.
Heat treatment & final condition
The final annealed or specified strengthened condition is linked to the lot; an aging treatment is not assumed for a solid-solution alloy.
Finished geometry
Head geometry, bearing face, shank and thread fit are checked after the final machining and thermal operations.
Where 400 fits — and what matters

Offshore & Marine
Deck-equipment brackets and marine pump skidsMonel 400 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on deck-equipment brackets and marine pump skids. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. The assembled contact is exposed to saltwater, deposits and neighbouring metals.

Water Treatment & Desalination
Membrane-skid and pump supportsMonel 400 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on membrane-skid and pump supports. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. The water stream, cleaning cycle and retained liquid define exposure at the installed part.

Oil & Gas
Utility skids and instrument supportsMonel 400 square-head positioning bolts set stops and clamp positions on utility skids and instrument supports. The square head provides tool purchase while the end face or point bears on the positioned component. Utility connections and pressure-boundary parts have separate acceptance requirements on the equipment drawing.
Same square-head positioning bolt. Different material priorities.
Monel 400 material dataInconel 625
Solid-solution strength and resistance to aggressive process liquids.
- Connection priority
- Bearing at the locating step and reaction against the square head
- Annealed or solution-annealed 625
- The delivery condition affects strength and high-temperature response. Keep the specified condition with the component’s mechanical acceptance; 718-style aging is not the strengthening route for 625. Include liquid retained at the square-head pocket and locating shoulder in the exposure description.
Super Duplex 2507
Super-duplex strength and resistance to chloride pitting.
- Connection priority
- Bearing at the locating step and reaction against the square head
- Final duplex structure
- S32750 chemistry and final solution treatment belong together. Forming, section size and cooling affect the structure represented by the mechanical and corrosion records. Include liquid retained at the square-head pocket and locating shoulder in the exposure description.
Monel K-500
Age-hardened strength in the nickel–copper alloy family.
- Connection priority
- Bearing at the locating step and reaction against the square head
- Strength and hydrogen exposure
- K-500 gains strength through aging. Cathodic protection, hydrogen exposure and the ordered condition need joint consideration in highly loaded marine components. Include liquid retained at the square-head pocket and locating shoulder in the exposure description.

Questions about 400 square-head positioning bolts
Which tolerance should locate the component?
Use the specified shoulder or locating diameter, with a matching hole fit. Head clearance serves tool engagement or anti-rotation; it should not silently replace the drawing’s locating datum.
