What we can make in A-286

Forms & dimension guide
Plain grip section on long shank bolt

Plain grip section

Use across thick equipment flanges, spacers and mounting stacks where the grip requires a continuous plain shank. The grip length keeps the threaded transition beyond the intended bearing or shear section.

Nut engagement beyond the plain shank

Threaded end

Allow enough usable thread beyond the stack for the nut, washer and tightening travel. Too little thread can leave the nut bottomed on the plain shank before the joint is clamped.

Plain shank compared with precision shoulder

Long shank vs shoulder screw

For a pivot or locating bore, specify the actual shank diameter tolerance and surface finish. A long-shank bolt provides grip length; a shoulder-screw fit requires separate control of the locating surface.

Manufacturing
Turn sample grips from bar. Form headed blanks for production quantities, then finish the long shank, transitions and thread while controlling straightness.
Final condition
Solution treatment and aging are tied to the ordered class and strength, with the heat-treatment lot traceable to the fasteners.

Where A-286 fits — and what matters

Industrial Machinery & Automation

Machine frames and positioning fixtures

A-286 long-shank hex head bolts pass through the deeper grip of machine frames and positioning fixtures; the extended plain shank locates the joint before the nut takes up the thread. Alignment, operating cycles and replacement access define the working interface.

Furnaces & Heat Treatment

Heat-treatment fixtures

A-286 long-shank hex head bolts pass through the deeper grip of heat-treatment fixtures; the extended plain shank locates the joint before the nut takes up the thread. Hot dwell, thermal expansion and repeated furnace cycles set the working load.

Boiler-duct supports and hot auxiliary brackets

A-286 long-shank hex head bolts pass through the deeper grip of boiler-duct supports and hot auxiliary brackets; the extended plain shank locates the joint before the nut takes up the thread. Hot dwell and start-stop expansion act on the supported or moving component.

Questions about A-286 long-shank hex head bolts

Which dimensions matter beyond overall bolt length?

Under-head length, plain-grip length, thread length and under-head radius locate the bearing and threaded interfaces. The finished aged condition and grip dimensions are recorded on the same part drawing.
