Finished boltASTM A453/A453M Grade 660 / ASTM F2281Bolting specification · Grade 660; alternative F2281 Type III Class B

For A453, select Class A, B, C or D and include A962/A962M. F2281 is a separate inch route; its condition designations are not A453 class names.

Specify one governing route and its edition. A453 class selection and F2281 AH1 / AH2 / AH3 treatment conditions must not be mixed as equivalent labels.

Raw material specificationASTM A638/A638M Grade 660UNS S66286

S66286 · bar, forgings and forging stock

Specify stock condition and heat treatment; an A638 stock certificate is separate from finished bolting acceptance.

Dimensions · metricISO 4014 / ISO 4017Coarse pitch · partial-thread bolts / full-thread hex screws

Select head width s, height k and thread length b. These are dimensional references here; other alloys do not automatically conform to the full steel/stainless product standard. Fine-pitch geometry needs a separate drawing or applicable standard.

Dimensions · inchASME B18.2.1Inch hex bolts / hex cap screws

Select the bolt or cap-screw pattern, head dimensions and thread length. Hex and heavy hex are different choices.

Threads · metricISO 261 / ISO 965-1Metric M · pitch plan and tolerance system

State diameter × pitch and external tolerance class, e.g. M12 × 1.75–6g. Fine pitch must be written explicitly; 6g is a thread tolerance, not a strength grade.

Threads · UNC / UNFASME B1.1Unified inch · coarse / fine series

State diameter, TPI, series and external class: e.g. 1/2-13 UNC-2A or 1/2-20 UNF-2A. Select 2A / 3A with the mating-thread fit; UNC and UNF do not mate.

Historical samples support the stated grade coverage. The ordered edition controls the full requirements.

Before production and at delivery

During quotation, a redacted certificate from a previous order can show the document format and recorded tests. It is a historical example, not certification of this product or a new order. Shipment documents must correspond to the material and batch actually supplied.

Grade 660 class

When ASTM A453/A453M is the governing route, state its edition, Grade 660, Class A / B / C / D, and nominal bolt size. If no class has been selected, identify that point for review.

Class and size determine which requirements apply; do not leave the class implicit.

Geometry & mating thread

Hex head pattern, diameter, under-head length, thread length, Metric / UNC / UNF and external-thread class.

A bolting material specification does not replace the part drawing or thread callout.

Condition & required records

Final material condition, heat-treatment records, required mechanical tests and heat / lot traceability.

The certificate package must support the class ordered, not merely state “A286”.

Example enquiry — adapt to your drawing

Please quote A286 hex bolts (A-286), UNS S66286, to drawing [number/revision], or diameter [value/unit] × under-head length [value/unit], quantity [pieces per size]. Thread: [designation/class]; coverage: [full/partial]; for partial threading, threaded length [value/unit]. If the drawing requires ASTM A453/A453M Grade 660, the class is [A/B/C/D] and the ordered edition is [year]. Please identify the final material condition, applicable size-dependent acceptance requirements and lot-linked inspection records.

Replace the brackets with your requirements, or send your drawing instead. If a condition or specification is undecided, flag it for review. This is an enquiry example; dimensions, availability, price and acceptance requirements are confirmed in the quotation and purchase documents.

Technical help

Is Grade 660 alone a complete A286 bolt callout?

For the A453/A453M route, also identify Class A, B, C or D, the edition and applicable A962/A962M requirements. The class and bolt size affect acceptance. A638 Grade 660 identifies a separate starting-stock route.

Can F2281 AH1, AH2 or AH3 replace an A453 class?

Keep the condition system belonging to the governing specification. F2281 Type III Class B is a separate inch route; its AH condition labels are not A453 Classes A–D. State one governing route and its treatment and testing requirements.

Can I request these bolts without a drawing?

Yes. Start with diameter, under-head length, thread designation and quantity per size. Add full or partial threading and the specified material condition. We review any missing drawing or acceptance details before the order is confirmed.

Examples explain designations, not available sizes. Specify fine pitch explicitly. UNC and UNF do not mate; full or partial threading is a separate choice.

A286 identifies the alloy; Grade 660 needs a class

A286 is an age-hardenable iron-nickel-chromium alloy. If ASTM A453/A453M Grade 660 is required, add Class A, B, C or D and the applicable edition. The UNS designation alone does not establish compliance with a particular Grade 660 class.

Keep heat-treatment and inspection records connected

Specify the final condition and the class- and size-dependent acceptance requirements. Request traceable heat-treatment and mechanical test records for the supplied lot. A material identification result confirms neither the full heat-treatment history nor all finished-fastener properties.
