Standards & threads

Finished boltASTM F468 — inch / ASTM F468M — metricAlloy 500 · N05500 · select the unit-specific specification

Specify finished aging condition and tensile / hardness evidence; verify processing and marking for the selected edition. F468M scope is M6–M36; this is a standard boundary, not a stock range.

The material is commonly called K-500; the finished-fastener grade table uses Alloy 500 / N05500. B865 stock alone does not establish F468 compliance.

Raw material specificationASTM B865UNS N05500

N05500 · bar, rod, wire and forgings

Specify aged or unaged stock and the required final aging condition. Confirm size-dependent acceptance.

Dimensions · metricISO 4014 / ISO 4017Coarse pitch · partial-thread bolts / full-thread hex screws

Select head width s, height k and thread length b. These are dimensional references here; other alloys do not automatically conform to the full steel/stainless product standard. Fine-pitch geometry needs a separate drawing or applicable standard.

Dimensions · inchASME B18.2.1Inch hex bolts / hex cap screws

Select the bolt or cap-screw pattern, head dimensions and thread length. Hex and heavy hex are different choices.

Threads · metricISO 261 / ISO 965-1Metric M · pitch plan and tolerance system

State diameter × pitch and external tolerance class, e.g. M12 × 1.75–6g. Fine pitch must be written explicitly; 6g is a thread tolerance, not a strength grade.

Threads · UNC / UNFASME B1.1Unified inch · coarse / fine series

State diameter, TPI, series and external class: e.g. 1/2-13 UNC-2A or 1/2-20 UNF-2A. Select 2A / 3A with the mating-thread fit; UNC and UNF do not mate.

Technical help

Why does the fastener table say Alloy 500 rather than K-500?

The reviewed F468/F468M tables identify Alloy 500 as UNS N05500, the material commonly called K-500. Use the UNS together with the commercial grade name and the required finished condition to keep the order unambiguous.

Is aged B865 stock sufficient evidence for a K-500 bolt?

It provides stock-condition evidence. Specify the final aging condition and the required finished-fastener tensile and hardness results under the selected route. Keep the processing and lot records connected through completion of the bolt.

Examples explain designations, not available sizes. Specify fine pitch explicitly. UNC and UNF do not mate; full or partial threading is a separate choice.
